Biography

          San Francisco born artist Katherine Brookes was raised in Oakland California where she developed a fascination with the Art Deco style so prominent in downtown Oakland, and the Arts & Crafts style which is highly visible in the Bay Area. Katherine completed her BFA in sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design. While she finds herself comfortable with a variety of styles and materials, and works in varied mediums such as oil paint, acrylic paint, gouache, clay sculpture, wood carving, plaster casting, jewelry design, and clothing design - the unifying factor is the influence of art deco style and her love for the 1920s and early 1930s. She is an avid collector of vintage clothing and has worked with Leluxe Clothing Co., whose logo she designed, to create period reproduction beaded dress designs. She is a great fan of silent film and can be seen being interviewed on Turner Classic Movies in a segment about silent film. She currently lives in Pasadena, California where she finds inspiration from the history of the film industry and the presence of art deco architecture and design. Katherine is a member of the Art Deco Society of California and participates in the Deco Belles, a Busby Berkeley style dance troupe which performs annually at the Art Deco Preservation Ball and the Gatsby Summer Afternoon Picnic.
